Ja koululomilla.../ And on the holidays...

Koululomalla vierailimme Hilltop on Tamborine:ssä. Vettä ripsutteli välillä, mutta oli kun olikin jotenkin mukava ilma. Ehkä syypää siinäkin kun elämänmeno hiljeni vähäsen siellä vuoriston ympäröimänä. Leikimme, väritimme, puhalsimme saippuakuplia ja nautimme hyvästä Suomalaisesta ruoasta ja vieraanvaraisuudesta. Alkuruoaksi saimme hernekeittoa ruisleivän ja lämpöisien sämpylöiden kera. Sitten seurasi makaronilaatikkoa salaattineen ja jälkiruoaksi omena ja vadelma crumble jäätelön kanssa, ja tietysti kahvit/babycinot/kaakaot.

























During the school holidays some of us found the time to call in at Hilltop on Tamborine. Yes, there was some rain, but as tends to be here in lovely Queensland, the weather was still quite nice. The freshness of the mountains, the surrounding greenery, and time slowed for just that moment... We played some games, had fun with colouring in and craft, blew bubbles and, best of all, enjoyed some traditional Finnish fare. Eeva and Tapani once again made us feel welcome while we dined on ham and pea soup with rye bread and warm rolls, then macaroni mince casserole with salad and for dessert, delicious raspberry apple crumble with ice cream and coffee/babycinos/hot chocolates.

Niin se vuosi jatkui.../ The year continued like this...

Kolmannella lukukaudella saimme paljon aikaiseksi - opimme vuorokaudesta ja kellonajasta (leikimme kello bingoakin), harjoittelimme tervehdyksiä, kerrasimme numeroita lätkimällä numeroituja kärpäsiä ja hyttysiä, lauloimme meidän ”viikonpäivät” laulua ja Vatut kertoivat ”Pikku Toukka Paksulainen” tarinaa kuvia käyttäen. Puimme pikku paperi nukkeja kun opimme vaatteista. Opimme Suomen koulumaailmasta ja saimme koululounaankin! Lopuksi opettelimme säästä ja vuodenajoista ja lapset sai taas koittaa onneaan mölkkyä pelaamalla.

Term 3 was one in which we learned about time (we played bingo with times and clocks), practised our greetings (“hyvää huomenta, päivää, iltaa, yötä), sang through the days of the week, practised our numbers by swatting numbered flies and mosquitoes, and the Raspberries told the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”! We dressed little paper people while discovering the names of clothing. We talked about school in Finland and enjoyed what would be a fairly typical school lunch – makaronilaatikkoa, leipää ja juustoa, piimää ja mehua. We ended the term learning about the weather and the four seasons, and playing one of our favourite games, mölkky.

Sääsanastoa / Weather vocabulary

Sää oli keskustelun aiheena lauantaina 4.9.2010. Oppituntien aikana nähtiin ilmojen muuttuvan tihkusateesta pilviseen ja vihdoin puolipilviseen.

Weather was our topic on Saturday 4.9.2010. During our two hour lesson we observed the weather changing from light rain to overcast and finally partially sunny. 

Välipalalla maistoimme Matin 5-vuotis syntymäpäiväkakkua, jossa oli koristeena Puuha Pete.


During our snack time we had a taste of Matti's 5th birthday cake. It was decorated with Bob the Builder.




Koska sää oli parantunut ja lämmin, päätimme mennä ulos toisella tunnilla pelaamaan mölkkyä. Mölkystä on tullut mielipeli ulkona ja sisällä kaikille, lapsille ja aikuisille. Siinä saadaan hyvää opetusta numeroiden muistamiseen.


As the weather had cleared and warm, we decided to go outside to play a game of 'Mölkky'. This has become a favourite game outdoors and indoors for all, both children and adults. It gives us a chance to practise our numbers.

Kouluruoka Suomessa/ School meals in Finland

Lauantaina 28.8.2010 juttelimme koulusta ja kouluruuasta Suomessa. Aikaisemmin olimme jo oppineet astia- ja aterimistosanastoa. Maistiaisiksi meillä oli makaroonilaatikkoa, ruisleipää juustolla ja piimää juotavaksi. Jälkiruuaksi oli vielä suklaakuppikakkuja.

On Saturday 28.8.2010 we spoke about school and school meals in Finland. We had previously learnt cutlery and crockery vocabulary. We had macaroni and mince bake, rye bread with cheese and a drink of buttermilk to taste. For dessert we had chocolate cupcakes.

Viimeinkin Henna tuli miehensä Luken kanssa vierailulle näyttämään tyttövauvaansa Iidaa.

Finally Henna and her husband Luke came to visit us and show their new baby daughter Iida.

Toisella tunnilla askartelimme isille kirjamerkkejä. Ensin siihen liimattiin isän valokuva ja pieni runo ja sitten lapset koristelivat sen molemmin puolin. Laminoidut merkit vietiin sitten kotiin piiloon odottamaan isänpäivää.

During the second hour we made bookmarks for fathers. Father's photo and a short poem was first glue on to the bookmark and then the children decorated them on both sides. Afterwards the laminated bookmarks were taken home to be hidden until Fathers' Day.

Christmas in July - 2010...

Deck the halls with boughs of holly...
The sunny, crisp mountain air and our warm hosts Eeva and Tapani Soini bid us welcome as we made our arrival at Hilltop on Tamborine. Christmas decorations were the first signs of the season and gave a lift to our already high spirits – a taste of the hospitality and exciting festivities to come.

Our hunger for caffeine was satiated with great coffee (thanks Petri and Tapani) and cupcakes with reindeer ears first up.

The Gold Coast skyline, and ocean and mountain views opened up from the main room of the guesthouse and huge open air verandah. After some exploration of the guesthouse (where Tapani ensured the wood fire was well stoked) and surrounds, we checked in to our rooms.

We welcomed sunset with glögi in hand, while admiring the lights and atmosphere of the 100 year old timber chapel. Views of Brisbane city in the distance from the huge front window to the nightlights of the Gold Coast in the other direction ensured oohs and aahs from all of us.

As for dinner... the dinging of a small dinner bell brought Eeva into the room to introduce the various courses and to impart titbits on Scandinavian traditions. (That custom of drinking your vodka schnapps in one go was one I had trouble with! Maybe I would have done better with the children´s lingonberry juice.) While we enjoyed three seafood entrees, to their delight the children were entertained with special versions of their own, including biscuits resembling oysters served in a huge oyster shell! The main meal was a buffet of traditional ham, casseroles and breads, and then of course there were the sweets! We were treated to cloudberry jam roll, blueberry and lingonberry pies, ice cream, torttu pastries, gingerbread and of course, coffee.

We had a wonderful evening, filled with good food, music and company, and the conversation was lively, both making new friends and remembering old times. The children handed out gifts from under the Christmas tree and everyone had the opportunity to wonder on how good they must have already been this year!

The next morning was sunny and warm, and found us again enjoying a lavish feast, this time for breakfast, and learning more about Scandinavian traditions. We relaxed, we celebrated, we feasted and we were left anticipating the next time...

Christmas in July - 2010 - Joulua...

Joulu on taas, joulu on taas......
Ihana, aurinkoinen vuoristoilma toivotti meitä tervetulleeksi viettämään joulua Mount Tamborinellä. Eeva ja Tapani Soini, Hilltop on Tamborinestä, olivat mainio emäntä ja isäntä meidän scandinaaviseen joulukokemukseen. Joulukoristeitakin löytyi mieltä korottamaan.

Hyvät kahvit (kiitos Petri ja Tapani) ja muffinsit poron sarveineen oli kahvin tarpeille mahtava alku rennon, mutta juhlallisen illan viettoon.

Tutkimme taloa, pihaa, kaunista vanhaa kappelia ja tietysti meidän sen yön majoitushuoneet. Pää oleskelu/ruokahuone avautui suurelle veranalle ja upealle kultarannikko-, vuori- ja merinäköalalle. Tapani varmisti, että tulisijassa oli valkeata ja lämpöä.

Illan tullen nautimme glögit ja kappelin valaistus toi “oooh”ta ja ”aaah”ta. Uskoimme kun kerrottiin, että kappelin valot näkyy jopa Brisbanestä. Brisbanen kaupunki tosi näkyi kappelin valtavasta etuikkunasta ja kultarannikon valot toisella suunnalla.

Ruokailu oli itsessään erinomainen kokemus. Kellon kilinä..... ja Eeva ilmestyi kertomaan tarjottavasta ruoasta ja perinteistä. Tarjoiltiin kolmea alkuruokaa – aikuisillle kalaruokaa ja lapsille omia erikoisuuksia, mukaan lukien pieniä oisterin näköisiä keksejä isossa oisterin kuoressa! Yhdellä kulauksella (no joo, ei ihan niin nopeasti minulta!) nautimme schnapsit, ja lapset nauttivat puolukkamehut. Seisovapöytä pääruoaksi ja kahvit jälkiruokien kera teki sekä mielemme, että vatsamme kylläisiksi. Oli kääretorttua lakkahillolla, mustikka- ja puolukkapiirakkaa, jäätelöä, torttuja ja pipareita.

Reipas ja ystävällinen oli keskustelu, puhuimme uusia ja muistimme vanhoja, ja lapset jakoivat joulukuusen alta lahjoja kaikille.
Hyvän ruoan, musiikin ja seuran jälkeen jotkut suuntivat kohti kotia ja me muut löysimme yöpuille.



Kaunis lämmin aamu... lisää perinteistä ja mahtava aamupala – karjalan piirakat munavoilla, lihapiirakoita, nakkeja ja korvapuusteja takasivat, ettei tarvitse nähdä nälkää moneen tuntin... ja jäimme innolla odottamaan seuraavaa kertaa.

Why study another language

Mama mouse was getting food in the kitchen with her baby when the cat pounced in. Snatching up the kid, Mama ran for the mousehole but it was obvious she wasn't going to make it.


Finally in desperation she whipped around and shouted "Bark, Bark" at the cat.


The cat skidded to a halt and ran away. Mama mouse turned to her baby and said, 'You see how important it is to learn a foreign language!"
