Joulujuhla / Christmas party

Suomi-koulu on päättynyt vuodelle 2009. Lauantaina 5.12.09 koululla vietettiin joulujuhla koko perheen voimin.

Finnish School has finished for the year. On Saturday 5.12.09 we had a Christmas party which included the whole family. Finnish Hall was decorated beautifully and the children came dressed in the ‘Sunday best’. The day opened with our welcome song which we sang together. Then we opened and looked at the younger group’s advent calendar and revised what we had learnt during the last term.

For craft the children made hats with ’plats’, which had Christmas lollies tied into cellophane plats which were then stapled onto each side of the hat. We also decorated some gingerbread biscuits, which were donated by the Scandinavian Bakery.

Next the children sang and performed Christmas carols on the stage, which we had learnt during term 4. We also had a welcome visitor, Pertti Kämppi, who performed some Christmas carols for our entertainment. He also accompanied the children with his guitar and lead the singing of traditional Finnish Christmas carols.

The children received their certificates of participation at the Finnish School 2009 and bags with their craft activities during this term and a few lollies. The parents received a magnetic calendar of the school days 2010 to place on the fridge.

Juuri lounasta ennen, lapset leikkivät ‘tarraa Petterille nenä’.
Just prior to lunch the children also played a game of ‘stick a nose on Rudolf’.

Traditional Finnish Christmas foods were placed on a self-serve table. Their preparation and supply was the responsibility of the parents and grandparents. There was potato-, carrot- and turnip casserole, ham, rosolli and rice porridge with glögi to drink. With coffee there were gingerbread biscuits, Christmas tarts and many different kinds of cakes. The children must have had these foods previously, as they all seemed to have enjoyed them.

I would like to thank all the parents and grandparents for bringing your children to the Brisbane Finnish School this year and helping with the classes. Thanks also to our adult students and the new families with babies. Thanks for this year to all our teachers also.
Have a very merry Christmas, keep safe and return refreshed in 2010.
