Muuttunut koulupäiväjärjestys alkaen 10.10.09/ Changes to school day

0-3-vuotiaat – mustikat - (Outi)
3-5-vuotiaat – vatut /vadelmat - (Virpi ja Auri)
6-18-vuotiaat – lakat/suomuuraimet - (Anja ja Vilma)

From the beginning of term IV 2009 we are going to spend part of the school day together as one group. In here we get to know each other better and learn songs and games together. The children (and their parents) will feel that they all belong to one big
Brisbane Finnish School family. We have also, finally, named our groups! These group gatherings in the beginning and end of the day are called 'berry soup'. So, the groups are named after berries:
0-3 year olds - mustikat (blueberries) - (Outi)
3-5 year olds - vatut/vadelmat (raspberries) - (Virpi and Auri)
6-18 year olds - lakat/suomuuraimet (cloudberries) - (Anja and Vilma)

The berry soup will commence on the dot 11.00 am, remember to be at the school in time! (The chairs are placed in a circle in the middle of the floor at the beginning of the day. They can be collected in a pile or just moved to the side for the class time, as they are required again at the end of the day.)

12.09.09 Satujen maailmassa / In the world of fairytales

Brisbanen Suomi-koulussa on tänä vuonna ollut teemana ’Luetaan’. Hankimme kirjoja Suomesta Suomi-Seura ry:n apurahoilla.

The theme at the Brisbane Finnish School this year has been 'Let's read'. We have purchased books from Finland with the grant from Finland Society. The children take them home eagerly each school day. They read them with their parents and do small exercises relating to them. Our library has also some new Finnish language videos for the entertainment and language aid for the children and their parents.

Koulussa on luettu perinteellisiä satuja tänä vuonna.

This year we have read some traditional fairytales. During the first term we read about Goldielocks and the Three Bears. Goldielocks entered the house of the bears, ate the baby bear's porridge, broke its chair and fell asleep in its bed. As well as the related fairytale vocabulary, we talked about kitchen utensils and furniture.

Little Red Ridinghood was the theme for the second term. Little Red Ridinghood went to visit her grandmother, where she found the Big Bad Wolf in the bed. The wolf jumped to attack the Little Red Ridinghood, but luckily the hunter came in and rescued her. At this time we looked at different kinds of woods, the animals and some plant in them.

Kolmas lukukausi vietettiin kolmen pienen porsaan seurassa.

The third term was spent with the Three Little Pigs. The First Little Pig built a house from straw and the Second Little Pig from sticks. The Big Bad Wolf blew both of the houses down and ate the pigs. The Third Little Pig was hard-working and built a house from bricks. The wolf couldn't trick the pig, but ended up himself in the boiling pot of the Third Little Pig. At this time we reviewed and learnt both cardinal and ordinal numbers as well as the colours.

On the last school day, 12.09.09, we celebrated our learning with a Fairytale Mask Party. We had a very enjoyable day. After a short lesson session, the children made themselves a mask, there were pigs, teddy bears and big bad wolfs. Afterwards the children played a few indoor games. Next they decorated small cupcakes into pigs or bears. They were delicious to eat. The day and the term ended with the whole family sharing a lunch.

Nyt odotamme innokkaasti viimeistä lukukautta ja joulua. Teemana on tontut.

Now we are waiting anxiously for the last term and Christmas. The theme is elves. First we'll talk about the mythological creatures of the Finnish forests, goblins, fairies and other supernatural creatures and then about various elves. Our Christmas craft is related to elves and we'll learn another three traditional Finnish Christmas songs.
