Christmas in July - 2010...

Deck the halls with boughs of holly...
The sunny, crisp mountain air and our warm hosts Eeva and Tapani Soini bid us welcome as we made our arrival at Hilltop on Tamborine. Christmas decorations were the first signs of the season and gave a lift to our already high spirits – a taste of the hospitality and exciting festivities to come.

Our hunger for caffeine was satiated with great coffee (thanks Petri and Tapani) and cupcakes with reindeer ears first up.

The Gold Coast skyline, and ocean and mountain views opened up from the main room of the guesthouse and huge open air verandah. After some exploration of the guesthouse (where Tapani ensured the wood fire was well stoked) and surrounds, we checked in to our rooms.

We welcomed sunset with glögi in hand, while admiring the lights and atmosphere of the 100 year old timber chapel. Views of Brisbane city in the distance from the huge front window to the nightlights of the Gold Coast in the other direction ensured oohs and aahs from all of us.

As for dinner... the dinging of a small dinner bell brought Eeva into the room to introduce the various courses and to impart titbits on Scandinavian traditions. (That custom of drinking your vodka schnapps in one go was one I had trouble with! Maybe I would have done better with the children´s lingonberry juice.) While we enjoyed three seafood entrees, to their delight the children were entertained with special versions of their own, including biscuits resembling oysters served in a huge oyster shell! The main meal was a buffet of traditional ham, casseroles and breads, and then of course there were the sweets! We were treated to cloudberry jam roll, blueberry and lingonberry pies, ice cream, torttu pastries, gingerbread and of course, coffee.

We had a wonderful evening, filled with good food, music and company, and the conversation was lively, both making new friends and remembering old times. The children handed out gifts from under the Christmas tree and everyone had the opportunity to wonder on how good they must have already been this year!

The next morning was sunny and warm, and found us again enjoying a lavish feast, this time for breakfast, and learning more about Scandinavian traditions. We relaxed, we celebrated, we feasted and we were left anticipating the next time...

Christmas in July - 2010 - Joulua...

Joulu on taas, joulu on taas......
Ihana, aurinkoinen vuoristoilma toivotti meitä tervetulleeksi viettämään joulua Mount Tamborinellä. Eeva ja Tapani Soini, Hilltop on Tamborinestä, olivat mainio emäntä ja isäntä meidän scandinaaviseen joulukokemukseen. Joulukoristeitakin löytyi mieltä korottamaan.

Hyvät kahvit (kiitos Petri ja Tapani) ja muffinsit poron sarveineen oli kahvin tarpeille mahtava alku rennon, mutta juhlallisen illan viettoon.

Tutkimme taloa, pihaa, kaunista vanhaa kappelia ja tietysti meidän sen yön majoitushuoneet. Pää oleskelu/ruokahuone avautui suurelle veranalle ja upealle kultarannikko-, vuori- ja merinäköalalle. Tapani varmisti, että tulisijassa oli valkeata ja lämpöä.

Illan tullen nautimme glögit ja kappelin valaistus toi “oooh”ta ja ”aaah”ta. Uskoimme kun kerrottiin, että kappelin valot näkyy jopa Brisbanestä. Brisbanen kaupunki tosi näkyi kappelin valtavasta etuikkunasta ja kultarannikon valot toisella suunnalla.

Ruokailu oli itsessään erinomainen kokemus. Kellon kilinä..... ja Eeva ilmestyi kertomaan tarjottavasta ruoasta ja perinteistä. Tarjoiltiin kolmea alkuruokaa – aikuisillle kalaruokaa ja lapsille omia erikoisuuksia, mukaan lukien pieniä oisterin näköisiä keksejä isossa oisterin kuoressa! Yhdellä kulauksella (no joo, ei ihan niin nopeasti minulta!) nautimme schnapsit, ja lapset nauttivat puolukkamehut. Seisovapöytä pääruoaksi ja kahvit jälkiruokien kera teki sekä mielemme, että vatsamme kylläisiksi. Oli kääretorttua lakkahillolla, mustikka- ja puolukkapiirakkaa, jäätelöä, torttuja ja pipareita.

Reipas ja ystävällinen oli keskustelu, puhuimme uusia ja muistimme vanhoja, ja lapset jakoivat joulukuusen alta lahjoja kaikille.
Hyvän ruoan, musiikin ja seuran jälkeen jotkut suuntivat kohti kotia ja me muut löysimme yöpuille.



Kaunis lämmin aamu... lisää perinteistä ja mahtava aamupala – karjalan piirakat munavoilla, lihapiirakoita, nakkeja ja korvapuusteja takasivat, ettei tarvitse nähdä nälkää moneen tuntin... ja jäimme innolla odottamaan seuraavaa kertaa.

Why study another language

Mama mouse was getting food in the kitchen with her baby when the cat pounced in. Snatching up the kid, Mama ran for the mousehole but it was obvious she wasn't going to make it.


Finally in desperation she whipped around and shouted "Bark, Bark" at the cat.


The cat skidded to a halt and ran away. Mama mouse turned to her baby and said, 'You see how important it is to learn a foreign language!"

Our School Year To Now

The school year is speeding along. We are learning lots and having fun along the way. Our days begin with "Marjasoppa" - singing our welcome song, sharing news and birthdays, and usually enjoying a song or two, with Vatut (Raspberries, being our younger students), Lakat (Cloudberries) and the adults all together.
This year we also started using the "Aamu" Finnish picture dictionary in our lessons. First up in the year was looking at ourselves – our faces, hands and body – and then our family.
We celebrated Laskiainen, holding our own "Hippokisat" (Hippo games) with three events: beansack throwing, long jump and walking with beansacks on our heads!
We had fun ice skating at Ice World at the end of February.

The Kalevala was discussed for Kalevala Day and Henna sang part of the first poem of the Kalevala, which we all then tried! We got to see some Finnish national costumes and puukko knives. Our younger students (Vatut) designed their own Sampos which would even make lollies and chocolate! To end the festivities we made a piece of Kalevala jewellery and a helavyö.
Easter saw us making surprise eggs and witches on broomsticks, and of course eating Easter eggs!
Cards were the fashion for Mothers` Day, while a carnival atmosphere presided over our Vappu celebrations. We had balloons, made little windmills, ate donuts and tasted sima.

We skipped rope, bowled, played ball games and pretended to ski and ice skate while learning about Sports.

Our now old favourites Kapteeni Käskee (Simon says), mölkky, 7-leikki, Jumppalaulu (heads, shoulders...) and Huugi guugi (the hokey pokey) all brought rounds of laughter and some exercise. And our little chefs again had the chance to try their hands at pullaa and "pigs in blankets"! YUM!

Kouluvuosi Tähän Saakka

Tämä kouluvuosi menee nopeasti ja mukavasti. Opiskelu sekä huvi mahtuu joka päivään. Joka koulupäivä alkaa "Marjasopalla", jossa Lakat, Vatut ja aikuiset tulevat yhteen – laulamme Tervetulolaulun, iloitsemme merkkipäivistä, jaamme uutisia ja laulamme tai leikimme sekä uutta, että tuttua.
Olemme ottaneet "Aamu" Suomen Kielen Kuvasanakirjan avuksemme ja ensimmäisellä lukukaudella oppilaat opiskelivat kasvoja, käsejä ja sitten muita kehon osia ("Missä on Peukalo?" taisi olla pienten suosikkilaulu!) ja sitten meidän perhe.
Juhlimme Laskiaista laskiaispullineen (keskustelu onko parasta kermavaahdolla ja hillolla tai mantelimassalla oli hauska) ja pitämällä omat "Hippokisat" - lajit oli: hernepussinheitto, pituushyppy ja kävely hernepussi pään päällä.
Helmikuun lopussa kävimme luistelemassa Ice Worldissä.

Kalevalanpäivää vietimme yhdessä – Henna lauloi Kalevalan ensimmäisestä runosta ja sitten mekin yritimme sitä. Saimme myös nähdä kansallispukuja ja puukkoja. Pienemmät oppilaat (Vatut) suunnittelivat omat Sammot, jotka taikoivat jopa karkkeja ja suklaata! Teimme lopuksi omat Kalevalan korut ja helavyöt.
Pääsiäinen toi yllätysmunien- ja noitientekoa, ja tietysti söimme suklaamunia!
Äitienpäiväkortit ja Vappukarkelot toi huhtikuuhun karnevaalitunteen. Oli ilmapalloja, omatekoiset tuuliviirit, munkkeja ja simaa.
Urheilusanaston myötä pallopelit, narunhyppy ja keilaaminen toi paljon iloa. Mielikuvituksen avulla jopa hiihdimme, luistelimme ja laskimme liukurilla mäkeä meidän hallissamme!

Kapteeni Käskee, mölkky, 7-leikki, Jumppalaulu ja Huugi guugi on tuonut sekä nauruja, että liikuntaa! Ja Suomi-koulun pienet kokit on taas saanut aikaiseksi pullia ja "possuja peitoissa". NAM!

Paljon on mahtunut meidän tunteihin ja on vielä paljon edessä. Tervetuloa mukaan!

Suomitalo on vuokrattu lounaan ajaksi ensi lauantaina, joten me emme voi sitä käyttää. Sen vuoksi olemme järjestäneet luistelupäivän. Ilmoittakaa Virpille kuinka monta henkeä on tulossa.

The Finnish Hall has been rented out for lunch next Saturday so we can not use it. Therefore we are having an ice-skating day instead. Please let Virpi know how many people are coming.

Laskiainen

Lauantaina 13.02.10 oli kaunis kuuma kesäpäivä Brisbanessa, noin 36 astetta. Suomi-koulussa vietettiin laskiaista. Oli liian lämmin mennä ulos ’kelkkailemaan’, joten päätimme viettää hippokisoja sisällä. Onneksi meillä on täällä Suomi-talolla ilmastointi.

Saturday 13.02.10 was a beautiful, hot summer’s day in Brisbane, about 36 degrees. The Finnish School celebrated laskiainen (Shrove Tuesday). It was too warm to go outside for a sled run, so we decided to have hippo-games inside instead. Luckily we have air-conditioning in the Finnish Hall.

Lapsille järjestettiin kolme kilpailulajia. Ensimmäisenä heitettiin hernepussia hallin lattialla. Lakkojen (isojen) ryhmässä pisin heitto meni ihan takaseinään asti. Seuraavana oli vuorossa pituushyppy. Hypättiin tasajalkaa viivalta. Hypyissä oli hyvin pienet erot. Jouduttiin uusimaan pari hyppyä, jotta saatiin eroteltua paikansaajat. Viimeisenä kilpailulajina oli hallin edestakainen kävelykilpailu hernepussi päässä. Välillä jouduttiin pysähtymään ja laittamaan pudotettu pussi takaisin pään päälle, mutta kilpailu oli kovaa. Kaikilla meni niin hyvin, että loppuviivalla oli vipinää.

The children had three different competitions. First we threw a beanbag along the hall. The longest throw by the older children reached the back wall of the hall. Next in turn was long jump. They jumped feet together from a line. There was very different to differentiate the jumps. We had to redo a couple of jumps to find the place getters. Last was a walking race to the end of the hall and back with the beanbag on the head. A few times we had to stop to pick up the beanbag to put it back on the head, but the competition was fierce. Everyone did really well and the finish line was busy.

Metallien jaon jälkeen nautittin hieman myöhäistä välipalaa/lounasta. Vaikka olikin lämmin ilma, meillä oli oikeita laskiaispullia, osassa oli mantelimassaa ja osassa hilloa, kaikissa kermavaahtoa ja ne olivat tosi maukkaita. Niiden kanssa oli myös kaakaota. Kiitos Paulalle ja Petralle näistä perinteellisistä laskiaisnautinnoista.

After handing out the medals we enjoyed a slightly late snack break/lunch. Although it was warm, we had real ‘laskiaispullia’ (sweet buns), some had almond paste and some jam, all had cream and they were really delicious. With them we also had hot chocolate. Thanks to Paula and Petra for these traditional Finnish treats.
